You have to realize that contributions you made to your 401(k) are most likely pre-tax dollars. Therefore, when you withdraw that money, it becomes regular income to you. Depending on your current tax bracket, withdrawing a lump sum of money from your 401(k) may bring you up to a higher tax bracket thereby defeating the tax savings you earned over the many years you contributed to the 401(k). At this point, you need to assess if it's worth paying off a mortgage that could possibly be tax deductible to you. There are other strategies you can use to optimize your retirement income without having to withdraw a lump sum from your 401(k) and minimize your taxes, but you will have to consult with a qualified financial planner to help you with those strategies. The money you can save by consulting with a professional could be quite substantial.

I am 61 years old with a balance of about $230,000...

I am 61 years old with a balance of about $230,000 on my mortgage.
